Why dos Marcellus think they offended the ghost?

Marcellus thinks they offended the ghost by offering him the show of violence. I believe that Marcellus throws his partisan at the ghost:

We do it wrong, being so majestical,
To offer it the show of violence;
For it is as the air, invulnerable,
And our vain blows malicious mockery.
