Why did hamlet pretend to be crazy?

Hamlet needed a way to expose the King without getting his head cut off. Hamlet's "craziness" allows him certain freedoms to provoke, ask pointed questions, and walk around with his pants down. Hamlet was hoping to use his mental instability to slowly build a case against his uncle.
