Unlike many renditions of the legend, Goethe's character is a student.... a man of knowledge rather than an alchemist. In this way, Goethe may be looking at the story in a way that is more similar to his own person, though, I do not believe he was using himself as a basis for Faust's character.

Goethe, being a literary celbrity in 18th century Europe, may hace considered himself a man of great knowledge and higher order thinking leading to the character Faust's love and obsession with knowledge and so partially yes. i do believe that some of the character is based off his onw personal persona. However if you look at the text, The Picture of Dorain Grey by Oscar Wilde, which is an adaption of the Faustian legend, you can see that the character Dorian Grey is based quite heavily on Wilde's own persona.
