What do you think the effect on Don is of his father trying to “live through” him?

Living vicariously through a child is never a good thing. A child can never satisfy a parent's personal unfulfilled dreams. Don is always trying to live up to an illusion his father has of football fame. This is very stressful on him. Consequently, Don struggles to get his drinking and partying under control throughout the book.
