Why was max surprised when grim called him son

Max was surprised because Grim never called him "son" before. Prior to the "rescue", he usually referred to him as "Maxwell" or "that boy," not displaying any love for his grandson. Fearful that Max would take over his father, Grim and Gram were very pleased that he had turned out to have a good heart.
