    Catholic Symbols in "A Temple of the Holy Ghost" and Other Stories

    Kind of Activity:



    Students will gain a working understanding of symbolism in literature, especially how it relates to Catholic symbols in Flannery O'Connor's work

    Common Core Standards:



    Divide students into pair or small groups. Have them research the following Catholic symbols used in O'Connor's work and in Catholic art in general:

    1. The Sun as a symbol of God 

    2. A clear sky as sign of clarity 

    3. Peacock 

    4. Nature as evil

    5. Nature as God's love

    6. Imperfect bodies as God's Love
