Benjamin's internal conflict is centered around his identity. He must come to terms with being taken away from the only mother he knows and being sent to live with thw van Rooyens, who claim paternity. As a result, Benjamin is torn about his true identity, who he is, his loyalty to Fiela, and his true place in the world.

Benjamin's external conflict is the decision that he be physically moved to another home, and the legal battles that accompany his placement.
