Mattie becomes emotionally attached to Nell and eventually adopts her. She first sees Nell as a small child in need of help..... in the end, she comes to love the child and sees her as a daughter.

Mattie acts as Nell's mother for so long that she is emotionally unable to leave her at the orphan house
