Exposition:

Jeannbe's father sent back from ship because of Pearl Harbor bonmbing. Jeanne struggles to adapt to internment camp.

Rising action: Both in Manzanar Relocation Camp and then Long Beach, the Wakatsukis try to reintegrate themselves into American society but face discrimination.

Climax: Jeanne’s high school in San Jose elects her carnival queen, Papa thinks Jeanne is forgetting her Japanese roots and flaunting her sexuality.

Falling action: Jeanne becomes more conservative but relalises that she will never be accepted by either society.

Conclusion: This returns us to the moment before Jeanne and her family go back to Los Angeles.
