Why do you think people are “ afraid of firemen” as Clarisse says? What do they symbolically represent?

Symbolically, firemen are known for saving lives. In Fahrenheit 451, however, firemen are feared.... they burn books, and they burn down the homes of those who do not adhere to societal expectations and laws.
