The firemen burn down old things that symbolize or explain about the past. In particular, they burn books. Books contain ideas and this is the only way the government feels that they can destroy ideas that they feel will threaten their power and ideology.

The firemen burn homes down that contain books and burn anything else that contain books or information that makes you think.
