"...a man cannot become wise , before he has weathered." What is the meaning of this quote? How does it apply to the author?

A man must have life experience and withstood many sorrows before he can know wisdom. The Wanderer, after many journeys, knows this to be true. He sees the folly of man as well as his own frailties.
