Dee's or "Wangero's" rejection of her old name is in reality rejecting her true family heritage. By changing the identity, she was born into, Dee creates an artificial caricature of herself that satisfies certain academic illusions she has created in her mind. She wants her heritage to be something it never was thus legitimizing how she wants to be seen by others.
