esperanza rising

Esperanza visits Papa’s rose garden to pick flowers for the fiesta. Esperanza spots a red bloom, a “vicious thorn” that pricks her thumb. Esperanza sees the bleeding from the thorn as a bad omen, but tries to ignore the “premonition.” Esperanza is correct. Her father doesn't come home for supper. He was killed that day by his own step-brother Tío Luis.
