Dickinson's central theme is "truth", and that we should always tell the truth..... but to tell it indirectly rather than overwhelm the listener. In essence..... Dickinson believes that although we should always strive to tell the truth, we might not be ready to hear it.... to face the reality.

As Lightning to the Children eased
With explanation kind
The Truth must dazzle gradually
Or every man be blind –
