The Old Man is a holy old man of sorts. He is more an abstract concept of goodness. He is not an angel but he does claim to see an angel hovering above Faustus's head with a "a vial full of precious grace." Some critis argue that the Old Man is Jeseus, or at the very least, a Christ-figure trying to save Faustus's soul.
