Willy just can't get ahead, even in his garden. Willy desperately tries to grow something to compensate for his failures in life. Unfortunately he even fails at the symbolism of success," I don't have a thing in the ground!" Both Willy's sons have abandoned him by act 2. It would seem Willy has also failed in his relationships with his sons as well as failing in his career.
