Why is Ned considered a good student by the white teachers (page 24-26)?

White teachers don't expect much from their Navajo students (racism) but do notice Ned is different. His teachers notice and praise him, saying he’s “almost as bright as a little white child.” Ned resolves to become a teacher himself except a teacher who isn't racist and expects the best from their students.
