why doesn't jonathan listen when Sundara tells him she can't eat with him ?

Jonathan sees her response as archaic and doesn't believe her. He tells her "things are different here", but she doesn't back down. In the end, Jonathan didn't know what to say, so he ended with, "Well, I guess if that the way you feel...."
