From the text, we are well aware that the narrator is in love with his wife. He doesn't seem to understand what she needs to be happy, and as a result, he too is somewhat unhappy. None-the-less, his references to his wife are all filled with admiration, and his desire to befriend Robert comes directly from the part of him that wants to show his wife he loves her.
