Why does katniss's decision to trust finnick save peeta's life ? What does finnick perform and what does katniss's assume he is doing ?

When Finnick steps into to help with Peeta, Katniss is positive that he's really trying to kill him. None-the-less, it is Finnick who succeeds in resuscitating Peetaand saving his life.
