Manuel the gardener stole buck to pay for gambling debts.

Actually, to be more specific, Manuel was the gardener's assistant.

Buck was stolen by Manuel the gardeners assistant and Manuel sold him to the man in the red sweater to pay off his Chinese gambling debts
