What made the dogs whom invaded there camps so terrifying and feirce?

The invading dogs are thin and starving and seem to be nearly mad with hunger.  While they are ultimately driven off, the sled drivers worry that their bites might inflict harm or disease on the sled team of which Buck is a part.
