The "shades of all manner of dogs" refers to the many roles Buck has filled since his days on the Judge Miller's estate. He's been the king, he's been coddled, he's been beaten and abused, and he's been forced to fight for his life. Buck has proven his worth, he has proved himself determined and loyal...... but at this moment, Buck is a beloved companion. His other roles now stand behind him in the shadows.
