In reference to the characters of Bernard Marx and Helmholtz Watson, "not fitting in" would be better described as rejected. In a world where individuality is a negative trait, and excelling at your job is something that would give you a bad mark on your company evaluation, being an outsider makes you a target of your coworkers and unacceptable to the World Controllers, whose main aim is to remove creativity in the name of stability. The process of thinking makes you an outsider, the act of questioning is an invitation for removal.
