The friendship between Bernard and Helmholtz has grown out of need for companionship, something that has been caused by the eradication of emotional bonds. Both men are intelligent, and yet, they are different. Unlike others they have retained their sense of identity, and as a result, they do not fit into society. Their friendship, in addition to their mutual suspicion of society, enhances those differences..... these two men are willing to be on the outside if it means they can retain their innate creativity, as well as their rationality.
