How is Abel an example of symbolism? What does his name symbolize?

Abel is a first-born son. He commands a lot of respect simply being the first-born son: a man who will keep the family line going. I think Abel is a Biblical allusion to Cain and Abel: the first two sons of Adam and Eve. Cain, the firstborn, was a farmer, and his brother Abel was a shepherd.
