After the family moves Kaelo's village, he becomes a far different man than the one his daughters thought they knew. The move finds Kaelo detached from his wife and children, dictatorial in his fathering methods, and obsessed with power and position within his village. Many of his actions are cruel, and we find the fact that he "barters" his daughters shockingly unbelievable, thus, we can only imagine how his daughters actually feel. In addition, he secretly plans for their circumcisions, a tradition within the community, but something he hides from them until it can no longer be hidden. Kaelo is cruel, greedy, self-absorbed, and without conscience.
