On his first day of school Antonio's mother and father are arguing weather Antonio will follow his Marez or Luna ancestry. Ultima decrees that Antonio will become a man of learning. In school Antonio feels humiliated over his traditional Mexican lunch, beans and tortillas, whereas the other kids have sandwiches. Antonio feels isolated by both language and culture.
