Ultima’s owl moves into the area near Antonio's house. Usually interpreted as a symbol of witchcraft and magic, Antonio views the owl's song and presence to symbolize the blessed Virgin leading the souls of the babies trapped in limbo to heaven (he sees this in a dream). The owl personifies Ultima's mystical spirituality; the owl's song represents the solace she provides to Antonio, simply by being a part of his life.

Bless Me Ultima

Because the owl is Ultima’s familiar, it is a symbol of magic and spirituality in the story, particularly Ultima’s. It represents Ultima’s protection of Tony, and the comfort and trust that he finds within her.
