The criticism Wright received after the publication of this novel was based more upon his depictions of a violent, racist South than anything else. Wright stood by his depictions, as they illustrated the world he grew up in. Parts of Wright's novel were purposely left out at the time of publication due to their subject matter.... Wright obviously had no choice if he wanted the novel published. All excluded text have been published since,
