Mead Hall or the Great Hall of Heorot was built as kind of a Viking club house for the king and his soldiers. It was built as a symbol of prosperity and strength in Hrothgar's kingdom. Basically allot of drinking feasting and hard core Viking parties went on there. The king would toss out their spoils of war, "offering everyone, young and old, all he could give that God had granted." It was considered a place of light, a refuge of cheer in a very dark and cold country. Grendel, of course, hated all this cheer and continually crashed the king's parties.
