Miss Ryan, Ernesto's first grade teacher, is pleasant and encouraging. She provides Ernie and her other non-English speaking students with extra support and private language lessons. Miss Ryan, like Ernie's other teachers, sends a constant message to her students that they are being schooled to be good Americans. Racial tensions are addressed immediately, and racila slang is not tolerated. Over the course of the story, however, we come to see Miss Ryan's support of Ernesto's ethnicity, in teaching him what it is to be American, she doesn't attempt to take away his ethnic culture, but rather, encourages him to embrace it.
