Why are human communities, i.e. political societies/the polis formed?

In short, answer to this question would be akin to the substance of his Nichomachean Ethics: namely, happiness. True happiness, for Aristotle means a cultivation of the virtues in the community called the polis. Ethics is political nature, and vice versa. There is no meaningful way to separate the two.
