1) Chris misjudged the terrain. If he was in possession of a map, he would have know that he could have crossed ten miles further down.

2) He was unprepared, had no map, no compass, and literally no food.

3) One of the greatest tragedies of his life was shooting the moose. He hadn't been able to dry the meat properly, and it was already becoming infested with maggots. Chris wished he'd never killed the beast, as it was all for nothing.
