While Papa is repairing a sabotaged wagon wheel, a truck pulls up and fires--a bullet grazes his head. Then the horse rears up in fright and pulls the wagon wheel over Papa's leg, because Stacey cannot hold the horse back.

Papa asked Stacey to hold Jack(the mule) while he and Mr.Morrison repair the wheels. The Wallace’s pull up in their truck and try to shoot Papa but the bullet only grazes his head. Jack was frightened by the gun shot and Stacey lost his grip. Jack pulled the wagon over Papa and it broke his leg.
