The German philosopher Hegel stated that Antigone represents the tragic collision of right against right, with both sieds equally justified. Discuss the moral positions of Antigone and Creon, which validate Hegel's assessment of this tragedy. Antigone and Creon are both stubborn, self confidant men. Each is certain of their own righteousness; they each believe in the rightness of their position. Inflexibility is also a trait of both of these men, and because of their refusal to see anything beyond their own beliefs or to admit to error, they condemn themselves to suffering, failure, and impending doom.
That they both have strong reasons for their actions is undeniable, as is the ability of each man to support his point of view in regard to law. The difference between them however, is that Antigone appeals to divine law, whereas Creon appeals to man-made law. They are both ultimately right, but then again you have to place a bit of blame on them too...... merely because they're both to pigheaded to look at things in another way. Hegel's assessment is a valid one.
