Antigone is cruel to her sister when she refuses to allow Ismene to change her mind and help bury Polyneices or be considered part of the plot to defy Creon. And which sister is wiser depends on which point of view one takes. The three themes of the play - the rights of women, the laws of the gods vs the laws of tradition, and the overwhelming pride evidenced by characters such as Creon and partly by Antigone - would suggest that Ismene lives by the way she has been raised while Antigone wants to think for herself and obey what she believes are the important laws to live by.
