At the opening of the novel, the mood of Anthem is dark and foreboding..... Equality is filled with guilt, musing over his thoughts and feelings, as he writes them down. Gradually, as Equality escapes the shadow in which he lives, we see the appearance of a different moods. He is joyous in his newfound freedom and finds pride within himself....... oppression is replaced by optimism.
