The setting of Anthem is in a dystopian World modeled after the primitive Dark Age. Conformity and ignorance are the main tenants of society. People are resigned and forced to accept whatever is told to them by the World Council. There is no sense of individuality which sets up the major conflict for the protagonist. Equality 7-2521 is a man who has always been too curious and too intelligent for his peers and his society. Equality 7-2521 discovers electricity but is cast out for rebelling against the status quo. The rebellion of Equality 7-2521 turns into a search for individuality and purpose.
