Annie's awareness of her own identity is crucial in the breakdown of the relationship between her and her mother. Annie is overly attached, ahe wants to be a part of everything her mother does..... they're like oner person, but they're not, and as Annie's mother urges her to branch out on her own. This includes dressing differently, accepting her father's relationship with her mother (Annie is appalled at the relationship of a man and wife), becoming a woman gracefully (she flips out when she starts menstruating), and checking her naughty behavior. Annie's break down occurs because she cannot accept the changes or the separation.
