Beatrice was in service with Miss Brent and discharged from her job after becoming pregnant. Brent considered Beatrice disgusting and immoral, and her actions (Brent's) led the girl to commit suicide. From the text, we can infer that Emily believes herself possessed by the dead girl, and that she blames the murders of the girl who possesses her.
