Trench warfare has specially dug trenches. The soldiers can stay in those trenches indefinitely. Taking cover means exactly what it says. If someone starts shooting a BB gun at you, you're going to run for cover; duck behind a rock, hide behind a tree. You are looking for something to put between yuorself and the enemy; not creating a shelter.
