How did Paul and his friends get even with Himmelstoss before they went to the front?

The group attacks Himmelstoss after he leaves a pub one evening. They encase him in a sheet, knock him over, pull down his pants, and take turns whipping him. Haie, the last to get his revenge, punches Himmelstoss repeatedly until the men let him go.
