Kemmerich was one of Paul's closest friends. They grew up together. Kemmerick's death was horrific, and Paul describes how death slowly crept up and enveloped his friend. He also feels immense guilt and powerlessness in the face war's reality.

Muller is practical in the face of Kemmerick's death. He's sorry for Paul's loss, but what he really wants are Kemmerick's boots.
