They mock Kantorek's set of trivia questions in school. They also make fun of Kantorek's "fatherland" propaganda as well as how the real war in no way resembled what their teacher said it would be. They also mock the subjects, like literature, they learned that have little to do with preparing them for war. The war, unlike school,  has taught them what is important in life. It has also taught them the incredible resilience they have as well as the complete futility and waste of war. They also learn how to light a cigarette in the rain, make a fire with wet wood, and use a bayonet.
