Jim Bayliss plays an important part in the play because he is the one person who knows what is going on. Jim knows about the plane parts, he acknowledges that Larry is dead, and yet, he plays along for Kate's sake.... he knows that Deever was not responsible for the parts, and yet, he passes no judgement on his neighbor. Jim is like a sounding board.
