Why was Calvin embarrassed by his mother?

Calvin was embarrassed when the Happy Medium gave the children a glimpse of what was going on at home. She specifically chose to show the children their mothers. Unfortunately, Calvin's mother was giving one of his siblings a spanking, and he was embarrassed.
