Chapter 3 and 4 describes says that The Balck Thing is evil but what is it? How was it created?

The Black Thing is really just a thing without light: a space without the light of God. It is evil because there is no sense of love anf God in it. Consider the Biblical line, "The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it." (John 1:5)
