How exactly does Watson know Stamford?

I know that Stamford was an old friend of Watson's, but how does he know him exactly? Is that in the book?

From the text:

On the very day that I had come to this conclusion, I was standing at the Criterion Bar, when some one tapped me on the shoulder, and turning round I recognized young Stamford, who had been a dresser under me at Barts.

The men attended medical school together at St. Bartholomew's Hospital.
